Exhibits and Awards

EXHIBITS:
May 2007-November 2007
"Philadelphia: The Charm of the City" at Cafe Centraal, 1218 Pine Street, Philadelphia.

AWARDS:
Winner, Best Philadelphia Photo, $250 top prize
King Tut Geocaching Photo Contest
Sponsored by The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (gophila.com)
for "Snow on Quince Street"
Philadelphia in snow
Judge's comments:
George Widman: Proof again that even a gray day can set the mood for a
very nice photo. While "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" may be a
stretch, primary colors' drama comes out best in shade and on overcast
days.
Philadelphia's tiny tree-lined and intimate streets - especially when
just dusted with snow as in the Ruth Savitz photo - are a perfect
setting to show that sometimes the best light is the least light.

Jason Smith: I like this image by Ruth Savitz for winner of the "Best
Philadelphia" photo because it is a peaceful rendition of an authentic
"only in Philadelphia" scene. With the counterpoint of the fresh snow
and the colorful flags I imagined the calm as the people walk away from
the camera, just before they return to the bustling city.

Third Place, Chiaroscuro All Media competition, Artists Emerge (artistsemerge.org)
August 2007 for "Halter"
halter and shadows

Judge's Comments:
“Halter” by Ruth Savitz was praised by juror Andrew Michael Ford: “truly felt it embodied the theme of Chiaroscuro. It’s simple yet intense use of shadow and light really grabbed my attention. It was so powerful, in fact, that I began to envision an entire story around this image. It’s ability to create such a narrative in my mind, through deep shadows and glowing light, was finally why I picked it. Art is not always what we find in a gallery but what we bring with us to a gallery. When a piece can combine both what is there and what is in us so perfectly, inspiring us to think and even imagine, it gets my vote every time.”
